9th February 2012 – Materials from Downunder: One man's tale of materials development and processing within CSIRO Australia
Dr Mark Gibson from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) will give a talk in UCD's Engineering and Materials Science Centre, Belfield, on Thrusday 9th February from 11:30 to 13:00 in room 234 (tea & coffee will be served at 11:30 - talk begins at 12:00). This is an open talk, so all are welcome. Please note, parking in Belfield will be extremely difficult at this time so public transport is recommended For help locating UCD Belfield and transport information, click here
Talk Abstract: This talk will provide a brief introduction to CSIRO and its
structure. It will then provide an overview of a number of research activities
that are currently being undertaken and developed within the Division of
Process Science & Engineering. These being: 1) The alloy development of
creep resistant magnesium alloys for automotive powertrain applications, 2) the
production of cp-titanium and alloy sheet material from powder and 3) the
non-equilibrium processing of materials with specific reference to the
production of bulk metallic glasses and associated composite materials.
Speaker Profile: Mark Gibson obtained a PhD in
Materials Engineering from the University of Wollongong in 1989. He has since
been with CSIRO for 21 years and he is currently a Senior Principal Research
Scientist and Research Group Leader within the Division of Process Science
& Engineering. He is engaged in a number of research activities related to
the manipulation of alloy microstructure through careful control of composition
and processing to optimise targeted functional properties. Recently, this has
been largely associated with magnesium alloy development
for light-weight automotive applications, but is now being extended more broadly into titanium alloys and
non-equilibrium processing.

July 2011 – Metallic Glasses: A Route to Exceptional
Strength and Toughness.
Professor Lindsay
Greer from the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy,
University of
Cambridge, will be giving a talk on Metallic
Glasses this evening at 7 pm in the
Royal Irish Academy, Dawson St., Dublin 2. This talk is
presented with the
support of the Engineering Sciences Committee of the RIA. Topics for
discussion
will include past research as well as recent advances related to the
modification
of the mechanical properties of this extremely intriguing material. To
view the talk abstract, follow the links provided below.
A
Ballymena, Co. Antrim native, Professor Greer is one of
the most well known and active members of the metallurgical
community.
Currently Professor and head of Materials Science at the University of
Cambridge, where he received both his MA and PhD degrees, Professor
Greer has
published hundreds of papers as well as several books on the subject of
metallurgy.
He is also the winner of numerous prestigious academic and research
awards from
institutions around the world as well as holding several visiting
professorships at world class research facilities. Apart from Metallic
Glasses,
some other areas of specific interest include, Phase nucleation,
Chalcogenides
for data storage and Electromigration. See the links below for more
information.
